I bought a Fujitsu Siemens P1610!

Since my last post about 5" vs 7" screens, and following a massive 7 hour round trip to collect it, I am now writing to you live from a Fujitsu Siemens P1610!

Yep, I've actually gone even bigger than a 7" device and bought myself Fujitsu's 8.9" touch screen convertible tablet UMPC (or Ultra Portable PC to use Hugo Ortega's definition).

And to Hugo's point, I think its reasonable to classify this device slightly differently to the UMPCs that I normally deal with such as the OQO, VAIO UX, Everun, etc. because it is considerably bigger in size. As I said in my previous post, that was the attraction. I want to try a more traditional clamshell device.

I wanted something that is extremely small and light but that I can still easily flip open and type comfortably on with a screen that I can easily view in this configuration. Using the VAIO UX's 4.5" super high resolution screen on a desk with a bluetooth keyboard is very hard on the eyes, and using the thumb keyboard to write long pieces is very hard on the thumbs!

The P1610 has a great keyboard which I can very easily touch type on (at full speed I reckon - I have reasonably slender fingers though, your mileage may vary), the screen is a great size and the device is super light. Mine with its extended battery weighs approximately 1.18kg.

The little Fuji caused quite a stir when it came out at the end of last year and there are some interesting YouTube videos from James Kendrick here and Hugo here.

I was lucky enough to find a P1610 with built in 3g and the extended battery and I'm finding it to be a great machine so far.

I will keep you posted with my progress.

Hi Simon, thanks for popping by my blog. The screen for my P1610 worked pretty well even at the lowest or second lowest bar of brightness.

I'm managing the mouse stick quite well in that... I had been successful in avoiding it while typing. However, my use of it is really limited, with more preference for using the keyboard or simply tapping on the screen.

How long does your extended battery last? If you are tempted to sell it, do email me first - we might be able to strike a deal. =)

Have you looked at the flybook V5? I nearly went for the P1610 but went with the V5 on Spec and the HSPDA facility, great machine and nice high spec. Did you consider one of these?

Hi Geoff,

The Flybook is a very very similar device. My P1610 has built in 3G as well. The Flybook spec. does look a bit more meaty but that's not a big concern to me; so long as I can run Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer I'm happy.

I'm finding the P1610 to be great. I'm getting about 4.5 hours out of the extended battery and the transflective screen makes it very easy to view outdoors.

Thanks

Hi Kim,

Thanks for commenting on my blog too! I'm getting about 4.5 hours out of the extended battery with a 3G connection and WiFi on.

I'm in love with the thing now! If only I could work out how to turn off the damn clicking feature on the trackstick!!!

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Oh, I think you can turn it off from Control Panel (I'm using XP). Control Panel > Mouse > Stick Settings > Press and uncheck Use Press or click on Advanced to assign it for other uses ;)

Cheers!

Kim,

Thanks for the instuctions that's really kind of you. Unfortunately mine doesn't have that option in the mouse applet (I am also on XP) but this does point me in the direction that I must not have the drivers/ track stick software installed properly.

I will have another search around!

Thanks so much for your help

Simon

Hi Kim,

I've got the right drivers installed now and the stick options have appeared.

There are options in there about it stopping the click functionality whilst typing, and even a configurable setting after the last key press until it starts working! This all looks very promising!

It seems that I can turn it off if I still have problems but now that I have the right driver I probably won't have the problem anyhow.

I have caught the stick a couple of times in writing this and the mouse didn't suddenly click somewhere else so its looking good so far!

Thanks again for your help!

Simon

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.com

Anybody had problems with some of the keyboard buttons?
I have a couple dead keys like DEL, the numlock, FN keys don't seem to respond either...

My boss has an another P1610 which has dead keys too, even space is dead.

Guess we have to try the warranty..
