OQO with HSDPA launch event. Exciting times! What will the new UX include?

In the few hours where I'm neutral again it has gone through my mind that I should wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. OQO have invited me to a launch event of a new "Anytime/ Anywhere(TM)" OQO device next week...I think we all know what that's going to be. Its going to be a fantastic thing as well. It's just going to be a bit pricey.

And Sony are clearly selling off the UX1XN in readiness for a new device. My contact at Sony is being tight lipped but I'm guessing that we'll see a UK version of the UX92/ UX490N. Most likely with the Intel Core 2 Solo U2200 1.2GHz (compared to a Core Solo U1500 1.33Ghz in the UX1XN) and 64GB SSD. Thats not that important though, the question is...will it have HSDPA? And if it does, will the price be back up where it was for the UX1XN at first - £2000?

I've come to the conclusion that both the OQO e2 with HSDPA and the new VAIO UX, with or without HSDPA, are going to be £1600+ at launch. With that in mind I will go ahead and buy a UX1XN tomorrow and perhaps it will be my last non-always connected UMPC.

Simon, you have to go 3G or 3.5G. Its worth it!

Hold off on that Sony UX...

Steve.

Just make sure you have a 3G phone. That's what bluetooth is for.

I'm going to have to return UX. It's faulty. Does not keep the time. :(

They don't have any more stock and can't find anyone else selling at a decent price. Tried phoneing some Sony shops, no luck...

Going to keep looking but might have to try something else. I was really chuffed with it. But not willing to accept faulty on arrival send off for repair etc.

Hi Zuber,

I've no idea where you live but I know the Sony Centre in Brighton now have 1 plus the dispaly model (in a glass case so wouldn't be the end of the world).

Eastbourne Sony Centre have 2 plus the display one. All of them are selling for £599. Which is a great price!

Also, Laptops Direct will have my perfect one back on Monday. Keep an eye on the "Opened Box" section of their website for it re-appearing at a lower price.

I hope this helps

Simon

Thanks Simon,

I'll start phoning around in the morning.

One question for alternative options before I hand over the money again (assuming I can get hold of of one). You've had a Nokia 770 I see. How do you think having a UX would compare to using a Nokia N810 and remote desktop (with a 3.5 G bluootooth phone) ?

I know you had some grumbles with the 770, but it looks like they have made a few improvements on the later models. Also, the addition of what looks like a powerful Palm VM opens up the opportunity for a wide range of apps.

Thanks,

Zuber

Hi Zuber,

My problem with the 770 was purely around software, and perhaps the lack of keyboard.

Perhaps these have both been addressed in the N810/ Palm VM? I can't really say.

The RDP client that I tried was excellent...except it didn't have any form of text input!! That is surprisingly annoying!

The 770 doesn't support Bluetooth PAN from memory so getting it to work with my Windows Mobile 6 based phone was a bit of a pain.

I did give it a go with the new WiFiRouter app (actually its a series of registry hacks run one after another) but for some reason it wouldn't connect to the web through it - it only got a "local only" network connection.

The Nokia devices are bound to be smaller, lighter, have longer battery life and be quiet. I just wish they ran Windows Mobile 6 and had HSDPA on board...
